Communications minister Stephen Conroy has been quick to capitalise on the latest sting by the AFP against child pornography, to brag about the government's support for the AFP. The Opposition, however claims he cut AFP funding for anti-porn activities in the last Federal Budget.

Conroy congratulates Police child porn crackdown

Australia’s Minister for Communications, Senator Stephen Conroy, has issued his congratulations to the Australian Federal Police over a major crackdown on the insidious crime of Internet child abuse imagery.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) says it is engaging in a new partnership with Australian telco Telstra to “strengthen its world-leading capability in countering new technology-enabled crime”.

The Federal Budget has allocated $128.9 million over four years "to create a safer online environment for Australian children." Law enforcement alone will get $49m and the government will press ahead with its controversial ISP filtering plans, but has stopped not confirmed earlier suggestions that this would be mandatory.
